MW4 Is Almost Here, and It’s Not on Game Pass. What You Need to Know

Every October, Google gets the same question in a slightly different outfit. This year it's "mw4," and searches for it have jumped by more than 200%, with over 100,000 people typing it in. The answer is simple: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026. If you're in North America, that actually means Thursday night.

Here's exactly when it unlocks where you live and what it costs, plus an early read on whether it's any good. Spoiler-free, promise.

MW4 release time: when it unlocks

Modern Warfare 4 unlocks at midnight local time on October 23 in most regions, on PC and consoles at the same time. North America is the exception. The game goes live at 12 a.m. ET, which is 9 p.m. PT on Thursday, October 22.

Multiplayer goes live with the full launch. If you pre-ordered digitally, you've probably been playing parts of it for days already:

  • Campaign early access: opened October 16
  • DMZ early access: opened October 20 at 1 p.m. ET
  • Multiplayer: October 23, for everyone

Early access was limited to digital pre-orders of the Standard and Vault editions. If you bought a disc, you're waiting with everybody else.

Preload and download size

On PC, preloading opened on October 15. Activision recommends an SSD with at least 115 GB free, and says mandatory updates may need more. Console sizes haven't been officially confirmed, so clear more space than you think you'll need. A day-one patch on launch night is about as traditional for Call of Duty as Captain Price's hat.

PC players also need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled, and everyone needs an Activision account. On consoles, online multiplayer may also need a paid membership such as PlayStation Plus. Do the boring setup tonight, not at 11:58 p.m.

Platforms, price and the Game Pass question

MW4 is out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox app) and Nintendo Switch 2. That last one makes it the first mainline Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since the Wii U days. It's also the first one that skips PS4 and Xbox One entirely, so if you've been holding on to a 2013 console, this is where the road ends.

Pricing is straightforward:

  • Standard Edition: $69.99 (£69.99 in the UK)
  • Vault Edition: $99.99, digital only, with extra operators and a weapon collection, plus one season of BlackCell and a DMZ bonus
  • Vault upgrade: $30 for digital Standard owners

Now the part that surprised a lot of people. MW4 is not on Game Pass at launch. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 both launched on day one for subscribers, so plenty of Xbox players assumed this one would too. Activision has been blunt: the game "will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027." That's roughly a year away. Your subscription will have to wait.

What MW4 is about

Infinity Ward's new campaign opens with a North Korean invasion of South Korea. You play partly as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier, while an outlaw Captain Price fights his own war. The story also travels to New York and Paris, then Mumbai, and the villain, known as "the Archer," is played by Mads Mikkelsen. Every big franchise eventually hires Mads Mikkelsen to be menacing. Call of Duty finally did.

Multiplayer launches with 12 core 6v6 maps plus bigger vehicle-heavy modes like Big War. Gunfight and ranked play are there from day one too. DMZ, the extraction mode from Modern Warfare II, returns with a new map called Hajin, a post-nuclear exclusion zone with dynamic weather and a Forward Operating Base between runs. One change worth knowing: DMZ is no longer free-to-play. It comes with the $70 game.

The Korean setting hasn't been without criticism. South Korean journalist Hyeonju Song said that "creating fiction based on it is bound to cause pain to someone." Infinity Ward says it consulted regional specialists and defectors to get the portrayal right.

So, is it good?

The early verdict on the campaign is very positive. In Nintendo Life's round-up of first reviews, IGN gave it an 8 (marked as not final) and said "Modern Warfare 4 made me feel something for the series again." Insider Gaming went all-in with a 9, calling it "the greatest Call of Duty campaign ever made," while admitting it "stumbles in places." GameSpot called it "another edge-of-the-seat thrill ride" but found the final boss fights too brief, adding that they don't feel "particularly challenging."

Expect roughly six to eight hours for the story's 16 missions, according to Windows Central. That's standard for the series, so don't plan a whole weekend around it.

Players seem to agree with the critics, at least about the story. Under the official campaign trailer, which has passed 97 million views, @luqzmania7650 wrote: "The trailer itself much better than whole MW3 campaign." @BearPig took aim at last year's game instead: "5 seconds of this trailer is better than the entire Bo7 campaign." And two days ago, @Ali-s3e2e posted a verdict after finishing it: "I know the franchise is in a rough patch, but this campaign was a masterpiece."

Plenty of people were also surprised by the cast. "Was not expecting Mads Mikkelsen to appear in this trailer..." wrote @SwrveYT, which honestly sums up how most of us felt.

I'll admit the Mikkelsen casting alone is what got me to watch the trailer twice.

The bigger question is multiplayer, and nobody can fully answer that until the servers fill up on Friday. Campaign reviews are in. Full-game scores, including multiplayer and DMZ, will follow after launch.

Should you buy it on day one?

If you mainly play for the campaign, yes. The reviews are the strongest a Call of Duty story has had in years, and early players are backing that up. Get the Standard Edition; the Vault extras are mostly cosmetic, apart from a DMZ head start some reviewers have already flagged as a pay-to-win worry.

If you live in multiplayer, there's no harm in waiting a few days to see how launch week goes. And if you're on Xbox and counting on Game Pass, the honest answer is that you'll be paying for this one or waiting until late 2027.

Either way, the search is over. Modern Warfare 4 is out October 23. Set an alarm and clear 115 GB. Maybe tell your boss Friday morning might be a slow start.
