The accomplished Square Enix Creative Business Unit 3, admired by fans for crafting Final Fantasy 14 and introducing the standalone Final Fantasy 16, is poised to explore uncharted territories in the upcoming year. As disclosed in a conversation with 4Gamer, producer Naoki Yoshida hinted at exciting directions for the CBU 3 team, suggesting they might be venturing beyond the renowned Final Fantasy series to work on novel projects.
2024 is a significant year for Final Fantasy 14 as it marks its 10th anniversary, promising fresh milestones and additions. Building on this enthusiasm, Yoshida hinted that the team is gearing up to take on new creative challenges, urging fans to stay tuned and anticipate what's coming.
In terms of ongoing commitments, Final Fantasy 14 players can look forward to the "Dawntrail" expansion, which is anticipated to drop in the summer. Additionally, the Final Fantasy 16 franchise continues to thrive, with plans to roll out its second expansion known as "The Rising Tide" within the year. On top of this, work is underway to bring Final Fantasy 16 to PC users, expanding its reach to a broader audience.
While these expansions advance, it was revealed last month that the core Final Fantasy 16 development team has primarily disbanded, moving forward to new projects, leaving only the DLC-focused crew intact. This transition indicates an intriguing shift for CBU 3 as they look toward crafting innovative gaming experiences, potentially stepping away from their Final Fantasy legacy for the first time.
